Membership and Attendances
REPORT 2003

Most non-members have just not been asked to join

For the first in several years we have shown an actual small drop in overall membership. We were down 125 last year but that was due to Career Development moving to a new branch. This year's drop of 112 (or 1.2%) is reflected mostly in the Voluntary and Community Sector which had shown a huge rise last year.

It is possible the changes in this sector are due to better systems for checking members against subscriptions in the host of employers we cover.

The increase in Education (a target area) is welcome as is the resurgance in Housing and Associated bodies.

The slight drop in Social Work may well reflect the Council's recruitment and retention crisis in Social Work and the number of vacancies. Nevertheless, with all the issues facing us we should be increasing membership across the board.

Our union is only as strong as our membership so it is everyone's job to recruit. Surveys continue to show that most non-members are only non-members because no-one asked them to join. It is not rocket science, you don't need a 'hard-sell'. In most cases it just means giving someone a form!

Benefits and discounts:

While representing members will always be the main role of the union, members do get many other benefits. Discount on mortgages, all types of insurance, holidays, legal and other services (click here) are just some of the offers open to members. If you know any company or service provider who may wish to consider offering discount to union members please advise us at the Branch Office.

Audit for proportionality and Fair Representation

Proportionality is slowly progressing with improvements at Branch Officer level, slight regression at Branch Committee and Stewards levels, but picking up from the loss of some experienced women activists in 2002. We need to encourage more women stewards.

Most Departments are trying hard but it is difficult in a climate of an overall shortage of activists, male or female.

The manual and craft proportions are down but it reflects changes in the status of some jobs. In the big manual & craft areas (City Dev and Env & Cons) we are hitting and exceeding targets and proportionality is up.

Figures are clouded if places are left vacant if there is no woman and a two delegate dept meets proportionality by having 50%.

Figures in brackets show 2002 figures
